Description
Diver at USS Monitor shipwreck. The USS Monitor was an iron-hulled steamship, the first such commissioned as a warship by the US Navy. It was commissioned in 1861 during the US Civil War. It was lost at sea on 31 December 1862. The wreck was discovered in 1973 and is maintained as a National Historic Landmark (since 1986) within the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary (established 1975). It lies in 67 metres of water off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA.
