Description
Disassembled DC (direct current) motor. At lower left is armature, containing the rotor, with its copper wire winding. Inside the shell of the motor (top) are the permanent magnets inside which the rotor sits. At lower right is an end cap with the commutator that passes current to the rotor. DC motors, or generators, produce electricity by converting mechanical energy to direct electrical power based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. According to this law, when a conductor moves in a magnetic field it cuts through lines of magnetic flux, which induces an electromotive force in the conductor.
