Description
Deforestation in Bolivia, infrared satellite images. In 1986 (left), small settlements are seen in the darker forest. In 2001 (right), these have expanded so much that little forest remains. The settlements comprise people resettled from the Altiplano (high Andean plains). Each settlement is surrounded by a radial arrangement of fields, which mostly grow soybeans for export. There are concerns that large-scale deforestation may contribute to global warming and the greenhouse effect by removing trees, which absorb carbon dioxide. The images were taken by a Landsat satellite (1986) and the ASTER instrument on the Terra satellite (2001), and show the Santa Cruz de la Sierra region.
