Description
Deep-sea dragonfish specimen. This dragonfish is the northern stoplight loosejaw (Malacosteus niger), found in seas worldwide at depth below 500 metres. It is named loosejaw because of the way its jaw drops open when catching its prey. Large fang-like teeth help secure the prey and smaller teeth guide the prey down the gullet. This specimen was found off Tasmania, Australia, and is part of the collections held at the Natural History Museum, London, UK.
