Description
Deep Impact comet strike. Coloured image of a plume of dust ejected from the comet 9P/Tempel 1 50 minutes after the Deep Impact impactor struck it. The Deep Impact spacecraft launched a 360 kilogram impactor at the comet, which successfully struck it at over 10 kilometres per second on 4 July 2005. The impact caused the ejection of a large amount of interior material. The mission was designed to study the composition of the comet. Comets are relics from the beginning of the solar system and as such can provide information on its history and formation. Image taken by the Deep Impact spacecraft.
