Description
Deadweight force machine. Physicist setting up a load cell for calibration in a 1.2 MN (mega newton, a million newtons) deadweight force machine. The force machine is 12 metres high and weighs 165 tonnes. It is the national standard machine, as it is the most reliable available at the 1.2 MN level of force in the UK. It is largely used to calibrate force transducers, which are devices that measure a material's shape deformation when a force is applied to it. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK.
