Description
D-Day landings beachhead. Build-up of troops and reinforcements at a beachhead established in Normandy, France, during the D-Day landings. The D-Day landings of 6 June 1944 were the largest seaborne invasion in history. Over 5000 vessels, protected by air power and barrage balloons, transported an Allied force of some 156,000 troops across the English Channel. The beachheads were established following fierce fighting that left more than 4000 dead. This was followed by the landing of large numbers of soldiers and equipment. By the end of August, more than three million Allied troops were in France.
