Description
Crew Exploration Vehicle and ISS. Illustration of a Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV, right) in low Earth orbit approaching the International Space Station (ISS, left) at an altitude of about 400 kilometres. Various CEV designs have been produced, including the Orion spacecraft for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). They typically carry a crew of 2 to 6 astronauts. This CEV is 10 metres long with a maximum diameter of just over 6 metres, while the solar voltaic panels have a maximum spread of around 18.5 metres. The ISS operates as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory, with experiments conducted by crew members. It has been built in stages since 1998, has been crewed since 2000, and will remain operational until at least 2020. The ISS is about 110 by 75 metres in size.
