Description
Saturn's moon Titan, Cassini image. Titan is the largest moon of Saturn, and at 5150 kilometres in diameter is the second largest moon in the solar system, after Jupiter's Ganymede. Indeed, it is larger than both Pluto and Mercury. Unlike any other moon, it has a thick atmosphere of nitrogen, with trace amounts of methane and other hydrocarbons. Cassini released a lander, Huygens, which arrived at Titan on 14th January 2005. This showed the presence of surface features that looked like drainage channels, and rounded rocks that could have been eroded in liquids, but did not find any hard evidence for liquids on the surface. Image taken on 5th May 2005 while Cassini was some 1.4 million kilometres from Titan.
