Description
Craters on Pluto, New Horizons image. Optical and spectral images of a cratered region on Pluto, showing methane ice distribution. This area is within the Vega Terra region of Pluto. The largest crater is around 50 kilometres across. The bright walls and rims of the craters stand out from their dark floors and the surrounding terrain. The lower image is from the Linear Etalon Imaging Spectral Array (LEISA) instrument, showing methane ice (purple) and water ice (blue). The upper view is a mosaic of two separate images obtained by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI). The data for these images was acquired during the flyby of Pluto by the New Horizons spacecraft on 14 July 2015.
