Description
Crab Nebula. Optical image of the centre of the Crab Nebula, also known as Messier 1. The nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion observed in 1054AD, and consists mainly of hydrogen gas. The nebula is 6000 light years from Earth in the constellation Taurus. This image was made using the 8.2-metre Very Large Telescope 'Kueyen' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
