Description
Cotton pollen, light micrograph. Cross section through a cotton (Gossypium sp.) flower bud anther showing pollen grains. The anther is the part of the male organ of a flower where pollen is produced. The pollen grains have a sculptured outer wall (exine) which aids its dispersal. Each grain of pollen contains a male gamete (sex cell) that is intended to fertilise an ovule (female gamete), and initiate the formation of a seed. Magnification: X153 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
