Description
Coronal hole. Extreme ultraviolet (UV) image of a coronal hole (dark blue region) in the Sun's atmosphere. In a coronal hole the Sun's magnetic field (white lines) opens up, which allows solar winds to escape. This cornoal hole is facing directly towards Earth and is sending high-speed solar winds in the planet's direction. This could cause polar geomagnetic storms that generate aurorae. Image obtained by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory on 12th October 2015.
