Description
Core of Cygnus A galaxy, illustration. The core of the Cygnus A radio galaxy consists of a supermassive black hole surrounded by a torus of dust and debris with jets launching from its centre. Magnetic fields (schematically shown by wavy lines) are trapping dust near this supermassive black hole at the galaxy's core. Cygnus A is one of the strongest sources of radio signals in the sky. This galaxy and its central black hole is around 700 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Cygnus. This depiction of the magnetic fields is based on observations made with the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) instruments, with the results published in 2018.
