Description
Core L1014. Satellite image of core L1014, found 600 light years away in the direction of the constellation Cygnus. Initially, L1014 looked completely empty and was thought to be a 'starless core'. However, this image shows a faint, star- like object (red). The energy emitted is thought to be too low for it to be a new star and has led some astronomers to believe it may be the youngest brown dwarf (failed star) ever found. However, others think that the faint signal implies a very slow and gentle accumulation of material in L1014 that may indicate a new way of forming stars. Taken by an infrared array camera aboard NASA's Spitzer satellite.
