Description
Illustration of convection currents in a saucepan on a gas hob. As the water above the gas ring heats up, its density decreases. This causes it rise upward. As it moves upwards and further away from the heat source, it begins to cool. As it cools, the density increases which causes it to sink back down again. In this way currents are created that circulate the water around the pan as it heats up.
