Description
Black hole. Computer abstract artwork representing a black hole. This shows material from a planet (Earth) being drawn into a gravitational well in the vicinity of a black hole. Black holes are collapsed massive stars. Their gravitation increases to a point where the escape velocity is greater than the velocity of light - so even light cannot escape (hence they appear 'black'). The grid lines represent the gravitational potential in spacetime, the curvature of spacetime by gravity was predicted by Einstein in his celebrated Theory of General Relativity (1915).
