Description
Supermassive black hole simulation. Computer-simulated image showing a supermassive black hole at the core of a galaxy. Black holes are formed when matter collapses to densities where gravity prevents light escaping. Supermassive ones at the centre of galaxies can contain the mass of billions of stars. The black region in the centre represents the black hole's event horizon, where no light can escape the gravitational field. The gravity distorts space around it, with light from background stars focused, stretched and smeared around the rim of the black hole.
