Description
Common fly (Musca domestica) on a slice of bread and jam on a breakfast table. A fly uses its proboscis to feed, secreting enzymes that will dissolve and digest the food. The fly then soaks up the resulting liquid with the sponge-like pads on the end of its proboscis. Allowing flies to feed on food in this fashion can result in the transmission of diseases (including bacterial infections) when the food is eaten.
