Description
Bread mould conidia, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The conidia (round structures) are the asexual reproductive spores of the fungus. Each chain of conidia grows on a specialised hypha (stalk) known as a conidiophore. Bread moulds include Penicillium, Aspergillus, Rhizopus, Monascus, and Fusarium. They are pathogens of plant material, producing the characteristic decay of fruit and food products such as bread.
