Scanning electron micrograph (sem) of a trichome (hair) on an ash leaf (Fraxinus excelsior). Trichomes are growths on plants and can be of varying shapes and sizes. They can be hairlike, mushroom shaped, branched, round, flat etc. If the surface of a plant has hairs it is said to be pubescent and any covering of hairs on a plant is called an indumentum. The purpose for trichomes is diverse but includes, protection of the plant surface, absorption of light, water conservation, preventiion of injury from insects, protection from wind and/or rain, just to name a few. This trichome is glandular and is a secretory structure specialized for active release or accumulation of substances. Magnification x8320 (x2050 at 10cm wide)
