Description
Volcanic ash in Antarctic ice core. Section of an ice core from James Ross Island, Antarctica, collected at a depth of 279 metres. The dark stripe at centre is a layer of volcanic ash. Particles trapped in ice cores can reveal past atmospheric conditions and changes in climate over hundreds of thousands of years.
