Description
Comet Hyakutake. Comet Hyakutake with the head at lower left and the tail stretching to upper right. Although comet Hyakutake is only a few kilometres (km) across, the cloud of neutral gas (coma) surr- ounding it is about 500,000 km across. This gas is being ionised and blown away by emissions from the Sun. The blue colouring in the tail is mainly due to fluorescent emissions of ionised carbon monoxide and nitrogen. The yellowish tail colouring closer to the coma is due to reflection of the Sun's light by dust particles from the comet. Image taken on 20 May 1996.
