Description
Molecular models and chemical equation showing the combustion of methane (CH4). Methane and oxygen (O2) react to give carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). This is an example of an oxidation-reduction, or redox, reaction. Here, the oxygen is reduced as it is split into two single oxygen atoms. These oxygen atoms them combine with the carbon and hydrogen atoms to oxidise them.
