Description
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of herpes simplex viruses in a cell. Herpes simplex is a common parasite of man, causing a variety of infections, including whitlows and cold sores of mouth & genitalia. Genital herpes, attributed to Herpes simplex type 2 virus, is one of the sexually-transmitted diseases least amenable to treatment, and has been implicated in the development of cervical cancers in women. Herpes viruses possess icosahedral symmetry, contain DNA, and are enveloped. Magnification: x33.750 at 6x4.5cm size.
