Description
Herpes simplex virus (HSV): false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles, orange) of the herpes simplex virus. Here, two virus progeny are migrating from the nucleus (blue & pink) into the cytoplasm (green) of an infected cell. Herpes simplex is a common human parasite, causing a variety of infections, including whitlows and cold sores of mouth & genitalia. Genital herpes, attributed to Herpes simplex type 2 virus causes a sexually- transmitted disease that is difficult to treat & which has been implicated in the devopment of cervical cancers. Magnification: x75,500 at 35mm, x190,000 at 6x7cm size.
