Description
Light micrograph of a colony of Bacillus subtilis (the Hay Bacillus), a species of aerobic, rod- shaped, gram-positive bacteria. The apparent holes in some of the bacterial cells are due to presence of spores, which are impervious to the stain. Endospores (resting cells) are produced in response to nutritional deficiency & adverse conditions, and may later germinate to form a vegetative bacterial cell, if conditions improve. Magnification: X 500 at 35mm size.
