Description
False-colour transmission electron micrograph of Bacillus subtilis, a rod-shaped, Gram-positive species of bacteria. An individual bacterium approaching the end of division by binary fission dominates the image. Yellow & black areas in each half of the dividing cell represent nuclear bodies. In rapidly growing bacterial cells the process of nuclear division proceeds ahead of cell division. B. subtilis also produces endospores (resting cells) which germinate and give rise to vegetative (active) cells. Magnification: x12,500 at 35mm size, x30, 000 at 6x7cm size, x50,000 at 5x4-inch size.
