Description
Interacting galaxies NGC 1531 and NGC 1532. Gemini South telescope image of the interacting galaxies NGC 1532 (large edge-on spiral) and NGC 1531 (its small companion, upper left). There is a broken bridge of glowing pink material between the two galaxies. This is nebulosity associated with starbirth, triggered by the galaxies' interactions. The galaxies lie around 55 million light years from Earth in the constellation Eridanus. This image was taken by the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on 5th December 2004.
