Description
False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Streptococcus sp. bacteria, forming a closed chain. Streptococci are spherical, Gram-positive bacteria that typically form chains. Although most are saprophytes (feeding on dead & decaying matter), some are parasites of humans & animals. They are also a part of the normal, healthy flora of the human respiratory, alimentary (gut) and female genital tracts. Pathogenic species include: S. pneumoniae , & S. pyogenes, which accounts for the high incidence of sore throats and tonsillitis in young children. Magnification: x4000 at 6x7cm size, x2000 at 35mm size.
