Description
Chrysalid spiracle opening. Close-up of a spiracle on a chrysalid of the Chinese owl moth (Brahmaea hearseyi). A spiracle is an external opening through which air enters the respiratory systems of insects. This moth is found in western China and south-eastern Asia. The larva goes through several stages of development with distinctive appearances. The chrysalid, the stage where the larva metamorphoses into the adult form, goes through a stage where the outer chitin covering is transparent, displaying the colours seen here. Photographed in China.
