Description
Chrysalid abdominal section. Close-up of the abdominal section of a chrysalid of the Chinese owl moth (Brahmaea hearseyi). The pointed end point at right is called the cremaster. This moth is found in western China and south-eastern Asia. The larva goes through several stages of development with distinctive appearances. The chrysalid, the stage where the larva metamorphoses into the adult form, goes through stages where the outer chitin covering ranges from black (as seen here) to transparent and colourful. Photographed in China.
