Description
Chinese owl moth (Brahmaea hearseyi) larva and chrysalid. This moth and its larva (caterpillar) are found in western China and south-eastern Asia. The larva goes through several stages of development with distinctive appearances. The chrysalid, the stage where the larva metamorphoses into the adult form, goes through a stage where the outer chitin covering is transparent, displaying the colours seen here. Photographed in China.
