Description
Cheshire Cat galaxy group. Optical image of a group of galaxies known as the Cheshire Cat group. The arc features are distant galaxies, whose light has been stretched and bent by gravitational lensing. The left eye of the group contains an active supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. Each eye galaxy is the brightest member of its own group of galaxies and these two groups are moving towards each other at over 300,000 miles per hour. It is thought that the Cheshire Cat will eventually become what is known as a fossil group, with one giant elliptical galaxy and other much smaller, fainter ones. Image data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.
