Description
Chernobyl exclusion zone inhabitants. Husband and wife in their living room inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone, Ukraine. On 26th April 1986, reactor number 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant went out of control, leading to meltdown and an explosion. Around 1000 square kilometres of land were directly contaminated by radioactive fall-out and a 30km exclusion zone was created. A number of families, known as samosols, returned to live in the villages inside the exclusion zone but few of them remain. They are mainly elderly men who worked as 'liquidators', those who helped clean up the mess left by the disaster. They grow their own produce (on table) and farm some animals, with little heed of the danger of potential radioactive contamination.
