Description
Charles Tilston Bright (1832-1888), British electrical engineer. Bright worked on submarine telegraph cables in the British Isles. He then supervised the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable in 1858, and was knighted a few days later in Dublin. Although the cable soon failed, Bright worked on many other underwater telegraph cables, including in the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, and the Caribbean. He was Member of Parliament for Greenwich (Liberal Party) from 1865 to 1868. Bright was President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1887. Portrait from 'History of the Institution of Electrical Engineers 1871-1931' (Appleyard, 1939).
