Centre of the Milky Way, infrared image. These stars form part of the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. This galactic centre is located in the constellation of Sagittarius, some 25,000 light years from Earth. By following the motions of the most central stars over a period of more than sixteen years, astronomers have been able to determine the mass of the supermassive black hole located here. This image was obtained with the NACO (NAOS-CONICA) infrared system on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT). Image published in 2008.
