Description
Central Milky Way, shown at four different wavelengths, with the wavelength decreasing from top to bottom. Across top, submillimetre radiation observed by the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) as part of the ATLASGAL survey, with data from the Planck satellite. Across upper centre, infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST). Across lower centre, near-infrared seen by the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). Dark dust tendrils in the near-infrared show up brightly in the ATLASGAL view. Across bottom is the view in optical (visible) light, where many of the features revealed at other wavelengths are obscured by nebulae and dust lanes. Image released in February 2016.
