Description
The constellation of Centaurus above the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) 3.6-metre telescope at La Silla Observatory, Chile. Surrounded by the mass of stars making up the Milky Way, the two bright stars right above the telescope dome are Alpha and Beta Centauri. This telescope, along with the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT) and the Burst Optical Observer and Transient Exploring System (BOOTES), was used by the Pale Red Dot project to confirm the presence of the exoplanet Proxima b on the 24th August 2016. Proxima b orbits the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Sun, which lies in Centarus.
