Description
Caricature of William Buckland (1784-1856), British geologist. Titled 'Costume of the Glaciers', this sketch dates from the 1830s and is by the British geologist and mining engineer Thomas Sopwith (1803-1879). Buckland was professor of geology at the University of Oxford at the time, and was a proponent of the new theory that certain types of scratches found in rocks were of glacial origin. Buckland is carrying 'maps of ancient glaciers'. The inscriptions at bottom relate to the debate over whether geologic timescales could be reconciled with the dates of biblical creation. A signpost refers to Alston, Cumbria, UK.
