Description
Carding machine, 19th century. Illustration of a breaker carding machine used in the cotton and textile industry. Carding is a technique used to disentangle, clean, and mix fibres such as cotton or wool. Manual carding was a laborious process, and the invention of carding machines in the 18th century speeded up the process. This machine was manufactured by the British textile company Platt Brothers. Artwork from volume 3 (1874) of a republication of 'Les Grandes Usines', a multi-volume work on French industry by journalist and author Julien Turgan (1824-1887).
