Description
Canals on Mars, shown on a map of Mars published in 1890 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910). The map is a cylindrical projection from 60 degrees South to 70 degrees North (excluding polar regions) and the ends of the map overlap by 60 degrees. The most striking features are the straight lines that were thought to be canals" but are now thought to have been a combination of an optical illusion and a mistranslation from the Italian "canali" (channels). Highland, lowland, canyon and crater regions are shown by shading and labels. The map was published in the paper Osservationi sul Marte (1890)."
