Description
Campbell's 'Primeval Man' (1869). Letter and photograph of the author enclosed with the book 'Primeval Man' (1869) by Scottish peer and author George Campbell (1823-1900), 8th Duke of Argyll. Campbell was a Fellow of the Royal Society (1851), a populariser of science, and a religiously pious member of the aristocracy. He stood firmly in opposition to Darwin and Huxley. His most important books were 'The Reign of Law' (1867), and 'Primeval Man: An Examination of some Recent Speculations' (1869). In the latter, he took the opportunity to dismiss evolutionary ideas about human evolution in favour of Biblical evidence.
