Description
Butchers broom stem. Light micrograph of a section through a butchers broom stem (Ruscus aculeatis) showing many vascular bundles (clusters) within the plant cortex (pink) and supporting fibres (yellow). Each vascular bundle consists of an outer circle of fibres (yellow) surrounding phloem (dark red) and xylem (red) tissue. Phloem transports carbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant while xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant. Magnification: x100 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
