Description
Breaching the Hindenburg Line towards the end of the First World War (1914-1918). Mounted troops and infantry from the British Army's 137th Brigade breaking through the Hindenburg Line near Bellenglise, close to St Quentin. The Battle of St Quentin Canal took place from 29 September to 10 October 1918, with a key attack being the Battle of Bellenglise across the steep and well-defended canal cutting. Breaching the heavily fortified Hindenburg Line was a key step towards the end of the war the following month on 11 November 1918. From the photographic section of the Imperial War Museum.
