Description
Book about David Livingstone. Frontispiece illustration to 'The Life and Explorations of Dr Livingstone', first published in around 1870. The scene is a lion attack in what is now South Africa, that nearly killed him in 1844. British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873) was ordained in 1840, and a year later began exploring the African interior. During an expedition along the Zambesi River he discovered and named the Victoria Falls, and reached the river's mouth. He mapped parts of Africa's interior, wrote accounts of the native peoples, and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain, he died in Africa, where his heart was interred.
