Description
Bluebottle fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head and thorax of a bluebottle fly (Calliphora sp.). Its large compound eyes (red) dominate its head. Female bluebottles lay their eggs on meat to ensure a plentiful supply of food for their larvae once hatched. Bluebottle fly adults feed on nectar, while the larvae (maggots) feed on carcasses of dead animals. The adult fly has a proboscis for the ingestion of food. It is tipped with a sponging disc, with which it soaks up liquid from plants, decaying matter or wounds on animals. Flies such as this may transmit diseases, particularly if they land on uncooked food. Magnification: x10 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
