Description
Bluebottle fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a bluebottle fly (Calliphora sp.). Female bluebottles lay their eggs on meat to ensure a plentiful supply of food for their larvae once hatched. Bluebottle fly adults feed on nectar, while the larvae (maggots) feed on carcasses of dead animals. Flies such as this may transmit diseases, particularly if they land on uncooked food. Magnification: x7 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
