Description
Zebra mussel research. Biologist Don Schloesser in his laboratory, holds a sectioned water pipe clogged with Zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha. Schloesser is a biologist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. He is studying the rampant spread of Zebra mussels through waterways in the USA. First recorded in North America in June 1988, Zebra mussels probably hitchhiked into Lake St. Clair on a ship from Europe. Since then they have invaded lakes and rivers, and bred quickly. By 1993, parts of the Illinois river had 94,000 mussels per square metre. The mussels not only encrust water pipes (including power stations) but excrete a substance that is highly corrosive.
