Description
Beta Pictoris planet detection. Observation made with the NACO (NAOSâ??CONICA) infrared instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope, showing the planet (white dot to left of black disc) orbiting the star Beta Pictoris. This young star is around 60 light years from Earth in the constellation of Pictor, and is here masked out by the black disc. The planet (Beta Pictoris b) is located at a similar distance from its parent star to Saturn's distance from the Sun, and is about nine times the mass of Jupiter. This image was obtained on 3 April 2010, using NACO in conjunction with the Apodising Phase Plate (APP) coronagraph.
